These new infrastructure projects promises smoother connectivity and some much-needed relief from Mumbai's traffic congestion
Mumbai’s traffic may soon have a few fewer reasons to test your patience. Three major infrastructure projects were inaugurated on October 22, 2026: the Sion Railway Overbridge, the Vidyavihar flyover and the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) flyover. The projects are expected to improve road connectivity and ease congestion across key stretches of the city.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the three structures virtually in the presence of Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar. The inauguration, originally scheduled for October 15, marks a significant step towards improving east-west connectivity across Mumbai’s suburbs.
The reconstructed Sion Railway Overbridge replaces a 1912-built structure that was declared unsafe. Its closure disrupted a crucial east-west link, making the reopening an important development for motorists travelling through the area.
The new bridge features two semi-through steel girders, each measuring 54.5 metres in length and weighing 496 tonnes. Its design also accommodates the planned fifth and sixth railway lines between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kurla under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-II).
The project includes improvements to approach roads and pedestrian infrastructure, along with better connections towards Kurla, Dharavi and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road.
For commuters travelling between the eastern and western sides of Vidyavihar, the new flyover is expected to significantly reduce travel time. The 650-metre-long structure connects Ramchandra Chemburkar Marg in the east to Lal Bahadur Shastri Road in the west, crossing the railway tracks near Vidyavihar station.
According to reports, the flyover is expected to bring travel time along this stretch down from around 30 minutes to 10 minutes. The project also includes a 100-metre railway overbridge and approach roads on either side. It is expected to ease congestion on the existing flyover near Ghatkopar station by providing an additional east-west connection.
In Goregaon East, the 1.26-kilometre flyover at Ratnagiri Hotel junction forms a key part of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project.
Featuring three lanes in each direction, the flyover connects General Arun Kumar Vaidya Marg to Santosh Nagar on Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari Road. It is designed to ease congestion around Dindoshi Court, Ratnagiri Hotel junction and neighbouring roads, while improving east-west connectivity.
The flyover will also support the wider GMLR project, which aims to connect Mumbai’s eastern and western highways through new road links and planned tunnels.
Three infrastructure projects, three busy stretches and a city hoping for smoother commutes. Whether these new links will make a noticeable difference to Mumbai’s persistent traffic congestion remains to be seen, as motorists begin using the routes.
