Here’s what you need to know about Garba and Dandiya nights in Mumbai

What's Garba?

Garba and Dandiya are traditional Gujarati folk dances specially performed during the nine nights of Navratri, worshipping Goddess Durga. What’s common between the two dance forms is that both are performed by a group of people forming a circle, except in Dandiya, where dancers use sticks as a prop.

When is Navratri?

Sharad Navratri starts on Sunday, October 11, and ends on Monday, October 19 and Mumbaikars have already begun to shop for traditional wear for the nine nights and book Garba and Dandiya places in Mumbai. While the last day for Garba and Dandiya remains the ninth day of Navratri, some places do extend till Dussehra, which is on October 20 this year. If you and your group are looking for places to go for Garba and Dandiya, then this list is for you. From Dandiya queen Falguni Pathak’s live performances to bigger venues to gather with your friends this Navratri, we’ve got you covered.

Do you need to buy tickets to Garba and Dandiya events in Mumbai?

While cooperative housing societies and sarvajanik mandals have free entry for residents, many commercial Dandiya events require season or day passes. You’ll need to check the prices, dates, and timings for individual events via platforms like District by Zomato or BookMyShow. If going in a large group, try buying group passes as they can cost much less per person compared to individual tickets.

What should you wear at a Garba or Dandiya night in Mumbai?

For women, there are colourful ghagras, chainiya cholis, with jewelry to go with the outfits, and men can wear kurta pyjamas or kediyus, which are common attire for Dandiya and Garba nights during Navratri. I usually prefer wearing comfortable sports shoes to get good leg support during non-stop dance sets. You can wear the footwear of your choice or dance barefoot while avoiding getting hurt.
