Mumbai restaurants grappling with rising expenses prepare a hike in menu prices. Here's what you need to know

Your favourite neighbourhood lunch and spontaneous dinner plans could soon cost a bit more than the price you’re paying now. Think that's pinching your pockets? You're not the only one, because the reason behind the higher bill is that Mumbai restaurants are grappling with rising expenses themselves.
According to the announcement by Indian Hotel and Restaurant Association, restaurants are preparing for a 10-15% hike in menu prices, as the cost of running a food business continues to climb.
These changes may affect people who rely on eating out – office-goers, students, and professionals regularly ordering food online. Reportedly, this move comes as restaurant operators face mounting expenses on cooking fuel, raw materials, staff, and daily operations. This proposed increase isn’t a blanket price revision across every food establishment in Mumbai – it depends on individual restaurants in Mumbai to determine how much to adjust their menu.
Running a restaurant involves more than what lands on your plate, and fluctuating dairy, vegetable, plus ingredient prices can affect kitchen budgets in a fraction of a second. Add transportation costs, commercial cooking gas, rent, and employee salaries to this blend, and keeping the menu prices unchanged becomes difficult.
As per The Times of India, the retail cost of dal across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region has climbed from ₹20 to ₹30 per kg, after the price hike at Vashi APMC of ₹10 to ₹20 per kg. In short, the proposed revision could affect everyday meals and restaurant outings, making that regular idli-dosa breakfast or comforting plate of dal-rice slightly heavier on the pocket.
The proposed increase in prices comes amid stepped-up inspections by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The latest enforcement efforts have brought the spotlight on food-safety concerns, including inadequate sanitation, pest-control problems, inappropriate storage methods and licensing violations.
This is another key reason behind the price hike in Mumbai, as multiple restaurants face greater scrutiny over food safety. Some restaurants are investing in additional cleaning, sanitation, equipment, and staff training, as strengthening hygiene practices demands additional spending on cleaning personnel and better food-handling facilities.
Not necessarily. As per reports, the 10–15% figure reflects the proposed industry-wide increase, instead of a compulsory revision every restaurant must follow. The final impact depends on each establishment’s costs and pricing decisions – so the increase in restaurant prices may vary from one menu to another.
As of now, there is no need to give up your favourite local eatery. But if restaurants start revising their prices, your regular meals and last-minute dining plans could become a little more expensive. Until individual businesses announce their new menus, checking prices before ordering may be a sensible addition to your eating out routine.
