Only Disney would believe that uncertain economic times call for a campy biopic of the NFL’s version of Lana Turner. Wahlberg aggressively underplays South Philly schmo Vincent Papale, who earned an unlikely three-season stint with the Eagles in the ’70s and became (so the film posits) a working-class god. Fine, but director Core fetishizes every period detail, from the grating retro soundtrack (Croce! Nugent!) to the extras’ acrobatically coiffed facial hair, resulting in possibly the gayest football movie ever made. To remove all doubt, a po-faced Kinnear plays the head coach.
