It looks much like your average municipal museum, but this understated institution in Daisen Park is well worth checking out for anyone visiting Sakai to see the kofun tomb of Emperor Nintoku. The museum’s kofun exhibition received a facelift in 2021 and provides an in-depth look at the burial mounds that make up the Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group World Heritage site.
Also on display are reproductions of a sarcophagus, stone burial chamber, and various ritual objects discovered within the Nintoku tomb. The free-to-enter Mozu Tombs Theatre plays two virtual-reality films that take you inside the ancient burial mounds and provide a palpable sense of their vast scale.
