Produced in the hills between Osaka and Nara since 1978, Kawachi wine is made in relatively small quantities and is usually available only in the Kansai region. This shop, tasting room and mini-museum in the city of Habikino offers a comprehensive introduction to the stuff. Besides wine, the facility also promotes local umeshu plum liqueur, which is available in nine varieties at the tasting counter and can be purchased by the bottle only here.
If you’re looking to dig deeper into the winemaking process and have at least a basic command of Japanese, book a winery tour (Mon-Fri ¥2,200; Sat, Sun & hols ¥2,750) through the website. The guided tour lets you follow the wine’s journey from grape field to bottle and ends with a complimentary tasting session where you get to sample 13 kinds of wine and umeshu.
