This unique bookstore is located in the downtown part of Konohana ward, an area known for its laid-back atmosphere and Showa-era (1926–1989) cityscape. The neighbourhood has seen an increase in art-related venues over the past few years, with one of these being Shikaku.
Step through the white double-wing door and you’ll find yourself surrounded by an array of books, most of them published by independent labels. The ‘Showa Kaido’ photobook series, for example, takes you on a journey through old Japanese towns, while ‘Machi no Moji Zukan’ introduces you to uniquely shaped Japanese characters as seen on signboards.
The bookstore doubles as a publisher with publications ranging from ‘Sake no Ana’, a collection of dialogues exploring ways to enjoy sake, to ‘Danchi no Kyusuito Dai-Zukan’, a book on Japan’s water towers, usually set up at danchi (multi-unit apartment complexes).
