With shelves organised by themes like ‘What is work?’, ‘Thinking about thinking’ and ‘What it means to be alive’, Toi clearly doesn’t aspire to compete with your average bookstore. A little repository of wisdom hidden away on the second floor of an office building, the shop highlights quality literature from novels to poetry, with a small selection of picture books and photo essays thrown in on the side. Note that though the range of genres and authors is extensive, practically everything on the shelves is in Japanese.
