Located adjacent to Domyoji Tenmangu shrine, Monzen occupies a handsome traditional house from 1926, once used as a tobacco shop but now serving as a community hub and a temporary outpost for an exciting assortment of little local shops and cafés. The specific line-up of sellers varies weekly.
The one permanent resident here is the Domyoji Bakushu microbrewery, whose Misasagi brews are available at the in-house brewpub. There are eight taps and a rotating selection of seasonal creations, so even repeat visitors will usually find something new to try.
If available, make sure to savour the rare Misasagi Ume White, a fruity ale with a refreshingly sour aftertaste, made with plums grown on the Domyoji Tenmangu grounds. First-timers may want to opt for the sampler set, in which four types of beer are served in small glasses.
