An important landmark in Fujiidera City, Osaka prefecture, Domyoji Tenmangu boasts a rich history spanning over 1,400 years. Today, the shrine is best known for its beautiful garden with around 800 plum trees.
For just one Saturday this March, you can explore the shrine after dark, as the grounds are lit up with special lighting effects and illuminations, from the main hall to the pathways and the trees. There will also be stage shows ranging from traditional Japanese and contemporary dance to taiko drum performances and more. An entry ticket is required after 6pm: ¥1,000 in advance or ¥1,500 on the day.
There’s more. You also have the chance to release a wish lantern into the sky. For this experience, you write your wish on a lantern and have it blessed by a Shinto priest before releasing it. These lanterns are the eco-friendly kind. Powered by LED rather than fire and tethered to the ground with a string, they are safe and non-polluting.
To participate, you’ll need to book your preferred time slot in advance: 6.30pm or 8pm. The ¥4,400 ticket includes admission for the shrine illumination as well as a sky lantern.
