In the sixteenth century, Mt Iimori on the border between the modern-day cities of Daito and Shijonawate was the site of a fortress that served as the headquarters of the powerful Miyoshi clan, lords of the area surrounding the capital of Kyoto.
Though the castle was demolished in the late sixteenth century and little remains of its once formidable fortifications, the site is worth a visit for history buffs and hikers. There are trails up to the mountaintop site from Shijonawate and Nozaki Stations, with the summit reachable in around an hour and a half at a steady pace.
