Harnessing the language of electronica, ambient and hip-hop to evoke the mood of a long-gone time in Japan, the Kyoto-based Meitei (aka Daisuke Fujita) broke into the big time with 2018’s Kwaidan, which was selected as one of that year’s best albums by the likes of Pitchfork and Bandcamp.
Since then, he’s released several more acclaimed records – including Komachi in 2019 and the three-part Kofu between 2020 and 2023 – refining his distinctive patchwork of hypnotic rhythms, obscure samples and lo-fi beats into an aural stream all his own.
Catch an artist at the height of his powers at Kyoto’s iconic Kiyomizudera, where Meitei will be taking the stage in the Main Hall of the World Heritage-designated temple on April 18. Tickets will be available from February 14 via Peatix and at the Kyoto store of organiser Sibasi. Tickets purchased at Sibasi come decorated with a special artwork created by Kamisoe, a tradional washi paper workshop in Kyoto’s Nishijin.
