Appearing in Basho’s poetry as well as in a traditional compendium of Japan’s ‘100 most beautiful views’, Minoo Falls in the northern outskirts of Osaka prefecture has been a scenic destination for centuries. The 33-metre-high waterfall can be reached via a leisurely 45-minute trek from Minoo Station through Minoo Park. Along the trail you’ll pass a handful of local shops and temples, which add to the area’s charm. Alternatively, you can leave your car at the Dainichi parking area, from where it’s a 10-minute walk to the waterfall.
Minoo Falls attracts serious crowds in autumn, when the seasonal foliage colours the scene around the thundering water in brilliant hues of yellow and red. A must-try seasonal speciality is the momiji leaf tempura sold at some shops in the park. To catch the autumn colours at their best, plan your visit around mid- to late November.
