About an hour by train from central Osaka and roughly 30 minutes from Kansai International Airport, Nishitottori Port and its neighbouring Bode Beach are popular fishing spots for whitebait, octopus and mackerel, as well as for collecting seaweed
In 2016, locals launched an initiative to revive the shore through oyster farming, and Nishitottori is now also noted for its bivalves, said to be particularly umami-packed. To get a taste of the local speciality, visit one of the many ‘oyster huts’ set up along the coast between mid-December and March. Note that these shacks are open only on the weekends and close as soon as they run out of the day’s supply; we recommend checking the detailed opening hours prior to your visit.
Additionally, Nishitottori Port is popular for its hands-on experiences. In winter you can pick oysters and seaweed, while in spring and summer visitors are invited to catch fish in the shallows.
