Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a rock musical about a fictional rock and roll band fronted by a genderqueer East German singer named Hedwig. Hedwig, formerly Hansel, assumes a female persona after a botched sex change operation which was performed to allow her to marry an American man and escape East Germany. The book is by John Cameron Mitchell, and the music and lyrics are by Stephen Trask.

MATTACHINE dance parties began occurring monthly nearly eight years ago at Julius’ Bar in the West Village of New York City. A spontaneous, tag-team mix too authentic to be called “Retro” - hand-made classic rock, early pop standards, soul, funk, punk, disco, New Wave, classic country, old school hip hop - at Mattachine, all music is dance music. It was the brainchild of PJ DeBoy and John Cameron Mitchell, fresh from their collaboration on Shortbus, to revive the languishing bar - one of the city’s oldest - with a monthly party honoring queer pioneers.
