Brick stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a shrewd bespectacled teenager trying to solve the mystery surrounding his ex-girlfriend’s sudden and frantic call for help. It’s hard to believe this was only writer/director Johnson’s first feature, as he shows a strong clarity of vision and plenty of his now-trademark penchant for action and style. While Johnson pays due homage to the earlier detective genres that inspired him, what elevates this modern-day story is that his femme fatales and brainy sidekicks are high schoolers in Southern California, with a neo-noir lingo all their own. It’s as easy to lose oneself in decoding the teens’ conversations as it is in the vast suburban scenery, but once it’s got you hooked, Brick refuses to let go. JGL shines in this role as he carries us through a witty, suspenseful, and refreshingly unique ride, with a final punch you will definitely feel right in the gut.
