The workers, families, and friends of Laborers' Local 483 have a lot to celebrate: - Workers in the District Council of Trade Unions and community supporters stood up against contracting out city jobs in Portland! Our members in the DCTU trumpeted more than a 95% strike vote to keep job security protections. - Our members in Recreation successfully negotiated a continuing education fund, organized for more full-time positions (20 added this budget year) and brought to light the city's massive reliance on low wages to get important work done in the community. - Over 200 workers from Metro Zoo and Parks, Portland Recreation centers, and Portland Park Rangers joined our union in the last year! - We won just cause rights and an accurate definition of "temporary" at Metro Zoo and Parks, which we can use to put a stop to the misclassification of workers who should be permanent and deserve living wages! - We fought and staved off major budget cuts in the City of Portland! - We bargained 6 improved contracts in the last 2 years! - We've made key alliances with other organizations of working people. $15Now, SEIU Local 49, and people working side by side with our members in Recreation organized with us to support a Contingent Workers Taskforce to convert "casual" positions to stable jobs in the City of Portland. We supported other working people by organizing for all contract and FT city workers to get a $15 minimium wage. And Portland City Council adopted our recommendations! - We got Portland City Council to acknowledge that city workers need a raise! And that's not all. . . Come out to share your success as a member of our union and celebrate with our families and community!
