National Lawyers Guild Lewis and Clark Chapter says
Over the last several months, we've seen how our law enforcement agencies, justice system, and broader society have allowed for black life to be taken with impunity. Every 28 hours in this country, a black person is killed by a police officer, security guard, or self-appointed vigilante. With the failure to indict Darren Wilson (who killed unarmed 18-year-old Mike Brown), Daniel Pantaleo (who killed unarmed father Eric Garner with an illegal chokehold), and countless others here in Portland and elsewhere, the message has become clear: black lives do not matter.

To counter this crisis, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has engaged in protest and advocacy that centers and celebrates black life, building consciousness around white supremacy within our institutions and our relationships. The National Lawyers Guild has supported this work in Ferguson and across the country, and wants to continue to stand in solidarity with this movement as it grows. To do so, NLG chapters across the country will be taking a stance against the criminalization and oppression of black people.

Please join the NLG & the Black Law Students Association at the amphitheater outside of the Legal Research Center on Thursday, April 2nd at 12:10pm if you also believe that Black Lives Matter. We will be hearing brief speeches, and will then take a group photo. Feel free to bring your own supportive sign!
