One of the most difficult parts of transitioning out of the military and into college is being surrounded by a group of people who do not understand what it means to serve in the military or go to war. This is no one's fault. Only about 3% of Portland State University's current student population have served in the US Armed Forces. This means that most young students today have never served, and most of their parents did not serve. Some may have been too young to remember 9/11 and the initial surge into Iraq, never mind the Gulf War and other conflicts. Today's military veterans do not want to be glorified, but they want you to understand who they are and what their service meant to them.

Veterans Voices & Combat Paper:
Participants of Veterans' Voices meet for five narrative workshops where they will tell stories and be coached to develop them into the final product - a stage performance on April 22, 2015. On the day of the final workshop, the participants will join Drew Cameron, founder of Combat Paper, to break down and pulp their old service uniforms into usable paper. The participants will then be free to use this paper as a new medium to tell their stories.

The art created will be on display before the storytelling event in the PSU Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom.

"Through papermaking workshops, veterans use their uniforms worn in service to create works of art. The uniforms are cut up, beaten into a pulp and formed into sheets of paper. Participants use the transformative process of papermaking to reclaim their uniforms as art and express their experiences with the military."
