1. Wedgewood Nougat, Hazelwood

Nougat may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you are a fan of the sweet treat, Wedgewood Nougat offers an interesting twist on the traditional ice cream stop.

Known for its soft, chewy nougat, the brand brings together its signature confectionery and ice cream at its Hazelwood Innovation Café.

There are six flavours to choose from, with combinations including nougat and lemon, salted caramel and toffee, and peppermint white chocolate. It’s a sweet meeting of two treats for those looking for something beyond the usual scoop.

2. Baglios Gelato, Waterkloof Ridge

If a silky, creamy scoop of gelato is more your style, Baglios Gelato is one to add to the list.

With Italian roots stretching back to founder Enzo Barbaglia, the gelateria offers plenty of familiar favourites, including pistachio, chocolate, strawberry, coffee and mango.

There are also more adventurous combinations to explore, such as pistachio and berry frozen yoghurt, alongside refreshing sorbets.

3. Yococo, Lynnwood Ridge

We couldn't leave out the dairy-free crowd. Yococo has been creating plant-based ice cream since 2016, using coconut milk to produce creamy scoops without the dairy.

Flavours include chocolate brownie, vanilla, Lotus Biscoff and mixed berries, but one worth trying is the golden milk, made with turmeric, ginger and cinnamon.

It's one I've personally tried and ordered more than a few times over the years. Trust me, it's addictive.

4. Few Scoops, Atteridgeville

For an ice cream fix on the western side of Pretoria, Few Scoops in Atteridgeville serves a selection of ice cream flavours and dessert treats.

The fun comes in dressing up your scoop with toppings, turning a simple ice cream run into something a little more indulgent. If you're grabbing something to take away or settling in for a sweet treat, it's another local option worth having on your radar when the craving hits.

5. Amos Gelato, Magalieskruin

For another taste of Italian-style gelato, head north to Amos Gelato in Magalieskruin.

The shop specialises in artisanal gelato made fresh, with flavours changing regularly, so there may be something new waiting each time you visit.

Gelato isn't the only attraction either. Customers can choose from milkshakes or turn dessert into a full affair with flapjacks topped with gelato, sauces and extra toppings.

6. Royal Danish Ice Cream, Colbyn

Royal Danish Ice Cream brings a little old-school charm to the Pretoria ice cream scene.

Its ice cream is made on the premises using a traditional Danish recipe, while even the wafer cones are made in-house. The shop has been under its current ownership since 1998, with the owner personally making the ice cream.

Alongside the classics, expect more creative flavours such as raspberry ripple, rose infusion and lemon curd.

7. Bunny’s Ice Cream, Mamelodi West

In Mamelodi West, entrepreneur Bunny Ngomane puts a playful spin on the classic soft serve.

The colourful creations are stacked with flavours such as strawberry, blueberry and vanilla before being finished with sweets and other toppings. The result is the kind of larger-than-life ice cream treat made for anyone who believes more really is more when it comes to dessert.

You can find Bunny's creations through her TikTok page @bunny_ngomane.

8. Glacier, The Willows

Tucked away in The Willows, Glacier offers another sweet escape.

Alongside ice cream favourites, the menu ventures into more indulgent dessert territory, with combinations featuring vanilla ice cream, peaches in syrup, red fruit coulis and Turkish delight.

Whether you're after a simple scoop or something with a few more bells and whistles, it's an easy excuse to slow down and cool off with something sweet.
