Where To Watch Eurovision 2024 in London

Where To Watch Eurovision 2024 in London

Listen, let’s not beat about the bush; Eurovision 2024 is tainted with more than a little stench of controversy, and agreat many of the capital’s most pro-Europop venues having chosen to boycott the final this year. These inckude the Clapham Grand, branches of Everyman, and Dalston’s Rio Cinema, which made headlines with the cancellation of London’s largest screening last month. Of course, you could easily watch Eurovision at home instead. But if you’d still rather head out, there are a few screening parties going ahead as planned, as well as plenty of venues hosting Eurovision-themed parties – where you can dress up and have a boogie to some camp bangers of yesteryear – without actually screening the final. Things to do in London this weekend

Things to do in London this weekend

Bank holiday Monday might have passed by all too quickly, but the week keeps on giving. It might just be a bog-standard two-day weekend, but there’s plenty to get excited about over your next couple of days off.  Look out for quality culture including a brilliant and intimate exhibition dedicated to Michelangelo’s not-meant-to-be-seen last works, a retelling of the fairytale ‘Blue Beard’ by theatre maestro Emma Rice and a wonderful programme at the world’s biggest South Asian film festival.  Or, hold out for the weekend when you can flick through rare and newly released sleeves at the Independent Label Market, catch an alfresco film at Embassy Gardens’ drive-in cinema, queue up for a free chicken giveaway at Morley’s and fill your bags with artisan goodies at the South Bank Summer Market. Still got gaps in your diary? Embrace the warmer days with a look at the best places to see spring flowers in London, or have a cosy time in one of London’s best pubs. If you’ve still got some space in your week, check out London’s best bars and restaurants, or take in one of these lesser-known London attractions. RECOMMENDED: Listen and, most importantly, subscribe to Time Out’s brand new, weekly podcast ‘Love Thy Neighbourhood’ and hear famous Londoners show our editor Joe Mackertich around their favourite bits of the city.

Gillian Cosgriff: Actually, Good

Gillian Cosgriff: Actually, Good

4 out of 5 stars

This review is from the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. ‘Actually, Good’ took home the top award at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival, so the stakes were already high enough for Gillian Cosgriff’s ruthlessly cheery interactive hour. The show is also all about finding happiness in the mundane – which is a hard enough mission at the best of times. The Aussie performer structures her performance around a game she vox-pops to the (very willing) audience, where you’re asked to come up with a ranking of ten things you ‘like’, before she writes them down in her ‘Book of Good’. Often, these will be as simple as ‘wearing a wireless bra’ or ‘getting a USB in the socket for the first time’ – or, in Cosgriff’s case, ‘bus drivers waving at each other’.  Cosgriff’s manic nods of approval at people’s ‘likes’ occasionally feel disingenuous, especially when it came to some of the more bland responses. But, overall, the optimism is endearing. The real humour came in with her various flashback stories and musical numbers she weaved throughout the game with a zesty flair and considerable pace. (A hilarious longer sketch of an unfortunate phone meeting with a councillor is especially good). There is also a darker undercurrent, which functions to counter the stickier sweet shell and remind us that with good, there is always bad, and with life, there is always death (yes, she is really blunt).  Her game could have quickly become tired or cringe – or risk sounding like a particular

One Hundred Shoreditch

One Hundred Shoreditch

4 out of 5 stars

A Scandi-inspired spot of calm in the hustling heart of Shoreditch You’d be forgiven for thinking the lobby of One Hundred Shoreditch was the office of some edgy millennial’s start-up, with its fizzy trap-house soundtrack, large statement sculptures and cool twenty-somethings tapping away on their laptops. Head upstairs, though, and it’s a very different story. The bedrooms – all whitewashed walls, feature tapestry hangings and pine – radiate an instant calm. The design is subtle, but carefully calculated: curved vases clash with hard corners, rough natural textures sit next to excruciatingly soft sheets. There’s an attention to detail here which makes it feel like you’re staying in the spare room of some impossibly fashionable friend, what with the cult DS & Durga toiletries and Jacu Strauss artworks. But it’s not all about sleeping. Formerly home to the hipster haven the Ace Hotel, this landmark east London building is now as much a social destination as it is a place to rest your head. Head to the buzzy rooftop for drinks – a cacti-dotted terrace with a pink-tiled bar and panoramic skyline views over the city – and you’ll see why. Neighbourhood Shoreditch might have lost its crown to its Dalston neighbour as London’s king of cool, but that doesn’t mean this area has completely forgone its edge. Nearby, you’ll find a tonne of late-night bars, music venues, art galleries and indie fashion boutiques – in addition to Dickensian-era cobblestone streets and a Palladian church wi

UEFA Women’s Champions League Semi-Final: Chelsea Women vs Barcelona Femení

UEFA Women’s Champions League Semi-Final: Chelsea Women vs Barcelona Femení

Over 30,000 tickets have already been sold for this pivotal fixture in manager Emma Hayes’s final season at Chelsea. After twelve years and fifteen trophies with the club, the legendary boss will be taking to the touchline for her final game at Stamford Bridge, as the Blues take on current Champions League holders Barcelona at the iconic west London stadium. England stars Millie Bright, Hannah Hampton, Niamh Charles and Lauren James could be among those taking to the pitch for the Blues, potentially facing Lioness teammates Lucy Bronze and Keira Walsh in the star-studded fixture. The current WSL champions were knocked out by Barcelona at this same stage last year, but will be hoping to hold onto the narrow 1-0 lead they established in the reverse fixture last weekend, before going on to secure the European trophy that has thus far eluded this otherwise dominant club. Tickets are almost sold out, so book now if you want to be there to witness what could prove to be a defining match in the club’s season, if not its history!

The Queens Hotel

The Queens Hotel

5 out of 5 stars

If you’ve ever spent time in Leeds, you’ll know the Queens Hotel. Quite literally on top of (part of) the Yorkshire city’s train station, it’s an art deco concrete titan and inarguably the city’s most famous hotel. Dating back to the 1930s, the Queens was the first British hotel to have air con and ensuite bathrooms in every room, and over the years it’s welcomed the likes of Cary Grant and Nelson Mandela. While the Queens could easily rest on its historical prestige, in recent years it’s attempted to keep with the times and undergone a vast refurb. A whopping £16 million has been pumped into bringing the place back up to snuff, glamming it up with communal areas, a huge new dining venue and more rooms. How does all that sprucing up actually feel? In short, pretty damn good. The moment you step into the Queens’ lobby, with its endearingly gauche décor and genially raucous ambiance, you get a proper sense of occasion that feels appropriate for somewhere so stacked with history. The Queens might have been hauled into the 21st century, but it embraces its historical glamour – and the refurb certainly hasn’t sucked out any of its soul. The Queens is entirely decked out in stuff that harks back to the art deco 1930s – and what isn’t from the Queens’ original period (or directly linked to it, like the hallways’ historic photographs) is tastefully matched. The Queens balances modern polish and historical character in a caring, detailed sort of way, ensuring all additions – everythin

Brooks & Brooks

Brooks & Brooks

If you’re after a ticks-all-the-boxes salon, look no further than Brooks and Brooks, which has been shaping and snipping the barnets of Londoners for more than two decades. Carrying a heady reputation in the hairdressing world for nurturing young, up-and-coming talent, they recently relocated from their home in Sicilian Avenue to a bright and breezy salon space in Covent Garden which previously housed Charles Worthington. I visited with a head of dodgy faded red dye, my dark natural roots beginning to peak through, and tasked Artistic Director Marlon with the mission to get my locks back as close to my original shade as possible. The consultation was in-depth and holistic, taking into account my washing routine and long-term goals – and I was impressed with the results, walking away with a mop of deep, rich, chocolate brown which blended perfectly with my natural hair. At Brooks, you really feel like you’re being listened to: your concerns and hairy ambitions are taken into account with genuine care and attention. You won’t find any pretence here: they do hair, and do it extremely well.

Body Movements

Body Movements

The great and good of the city’s queer nightlife scene are once again coming together for this massive day-to-night festival celebrating LGBTQ+ clubbing culture in London and beyond. Having outgrown its first home in Hackney Wick, Body Movements is making the move to Southwark Park for its biggest and best edition on the Sunday of the August Bank Holiday. Adonis, Big Dyke Energy, Little Gay Brother, Love Child, MARICAS, NYC Downlow, Pxssy Palace, Queer House Party, Riposte and unfold are just a handful of the 25+ clubnights and collectives involved this time around. And there are some pretty exciting names on the line-up, including Swedish rapper and singer COBRAH, who previously headlined the festival’s Winter 2023 edition alongside LSDXOXO, Coucou Chloe and Confidence Man. Be sure to sign up to emails for information on ticket sales in due course.

EuroSmash Festival

EuroSmash Festival

This year’s Eurovision is shaping up to be a slightly controversial one, with many of the contest’s biggest stans choosing to boycott. So if you’re looking for a way to get your dose of cheesy Europop without watching the live show this year, look no further than EuroSmash, a brand spanking new day festival at south London arts hub Woolwich Works featuring a stellar line-up of former contestants. On the bill are larger-than-life Irish twins Jedward – who represented the land of Eire in 2011 and 2012 – and this year’s Irish entry Brooke (just Brooke), plus Norway’s Subwoolfer, Bulgaria’s Kristian Kostov, and Belgium’s Gustaph. Saxophone-playing drag artist Snow White Trash and ‘Drag Race UK’ contestant Just May also feature, alongside a string quartet playing all your favourite Eurovision classics. Headlining the festival is Katrina, who won the contest in 1997 (the last time the UK was victorious) with her snappy hit ‘Love Shine a Light’. We’d certainly be giving douze points to that line-up.

Wish You Were Here with Nancy Silverton

Wish You Were Here with Nancy Silverton

If you’re the type of person who devours each new series of ‘Chef’s Table’ as soon as it drops, you’ll have heard of Nancy Silverton, the James Beard Award-winning chef behind LA’s iconic Italian restaurant Campanile, and a host more celebrated dining spots. She’s teaming up with Sera – an exciting new platform staging truly special foodie events across the capital – for a menu of her greatest hits, as part of the  platform’s new ‘Wish you were here’ series, offering Londoners the chance to enjoy food from some of the most celebrated chefs on the planet. Available for one night only at Silverton’s London outpost of Pizzeria Mozza, the menu costs £80 a head (or £120 with wine pairing) and features plenty of her most iconic dishes, including the ‘Nancy Caesar’ and a selection of Osteria Mozza inspired pastas. An unforgettable feast, without the hassle of an 11-hour flight.

M25 closures this weekend: May 2024 dates and everything you need to know

The M25, the UK’s busiest motorway, will be closed again this weekend. Back when a stretch of the road closed in March (the first time it had ever completely closed in both directions), drivers faced lengthy traffic jams and longwinded diversions.  Expect exactly the same this time – though there’s also the added complication of ULEZ fines. While the M25 is not within the ULEZ zone, the official diversion will take drivers into it. National Highways has said the ULEZ won’t be enforced on these diverted roads – so drivers need to make sure they follow the diversion exactly. Worried about navigating the M25 this weekend? Here’s everything you need to know about the closure, from where it is to how to get around it (without getting slapped with a ULEZ fine) When is the M25 closing in May? It’ll close from 9pm on Friday May 10 until 6am on Monday May 13. Where is the M25 closed exactly? This time, the motorway will be closed in both directions between junctions nine and 10.  Why is it closing? The closure is so that workers can work on a huge £317 million project around junction 10. This phase will see a new bridge and a gantry lifted into place.  Has the M25 ever closed before? Following the closure in March, this is the second-ever planned full closure of the M25 since it opened in 1986.  What is the diversion route? According to National Highways, the 19-mile diversion route is as follows. Clockwise   Leave M25 at junction 8, A217 (Reigate) Follow the A217 London, Sutton, (A2

London bus strikes in May 2024: everything you need to know

London bus strikes in May 2024: everything you need to know

Thought London’s strikes were limited to our train network? Think again. Alongside the industrial action planned for the capital’s rail services in May (read more about that here), strikes have been taking place on buses, too.  Last week it was announced that several bus routes, primarily in southwest London, were to be affected by strike action from control rooms workers employed by Transport UK (previously known as Abellio). The 40 controllers, whose job it is to instruct drivers on accidents and traffic jams, ensuring buses run on time, work in Battersea and Twickenham.  Today (May 3), however, those strikes have officially been called off. The workers have received an improved pay offer, and will now vote on whether to approve it.  Abellio/Transport UK control room staff previously walked out over six days in January and February, and eight days in March. When are the London bus strikes? The strikes were supposed to take place on May 8, 9 and 10 and then from May 13-17. All action has now been called off.  Which bus routes will be affected? Quite a few routes were set to be disrupted, all based at Battersea and Twickenham bus garages. The most notable routes likely to be impacted were the 24, 27, 111, 156, 159, 267, 285, 322, 344, 345, 415, 490, 969, H20, H25, H26, R68 and R70. Those routes would still have run on strike days, but they’d likely have been busier than usual.  Why are bus control room staff striking? Workers were striking as part of an ongoing pay dispute. A

LiveNation is giving out over 40,000 cheap gig tickets – get £25 tickets to Shania Twain, Noel Gallagher, Nile Rodgers and more

If you’re a fan of big-name pop artists, right now it feels more expensive than ever to see those musicians live. These days it’s pretty normal for big-ticket gigs to cost upwards of £100 – and that’s on general release. Resale prices can be even more eye-watering. Next week, however, you’ll have the chance to buy tickets to some huge gigs for a fraction of the usual price. As part of Concert Week 2024, LiveNation is offering 40,000 cut-price tickets to some of the year’s biggest shows – starting from just £25.  So, who’s on the bill? Everyone from big current pop stars like Doja Cat, Charli XCX and James Arthur are on there, as are established names like Grace Jones, New Order, Shania Twain and Nile Rodgers. Air, Avril Lavigne, Craig David, Idles, Katherine Jenkins, Loyle Carner, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Paloma Faith… a frankly ridiculous number of huge names are taking part.  This is the first time that LiveNation has extended Music Week promotions to the UK (it’s been running over in the US for a decade). There’ll be offers, promotions and competitions all next week (May 6-11), though the cheap tickets are only available for 24 hours from noon on May 9 to noon on May 10. You can find the full line-up of artists and venues with discounted tickets on the LiveNation website here. Looking for gigs to go to this month?
