Book your ticket now for the jolliest party of the season!

1. Make your own Mozartkugel

Invented in Salzburg in 1890, these chocolate and marzipan praline balls can now be found all over Austria, but there’s something special about trying them in the city where they were born. Book onto a Mozartkugel making workshop and not only will you get to make your own Mozart chocolates, you’ll enjoy the Christmas atmosphere while you eat them.

2. See Krampus and Perchten parades

At the annual events that Salzburg is famous for, Krampus and Perchten walk through the streets in winter, in scary masks and draped in fur, to ward off evil spirits. They might look scary with their horns and devilish masks, but this frightening appearance is purely for those pesky evil spirits. And they’re not all scary. While the Schiachperchten drive away evil, the Schönperchten appear friendly and bring good luck. Parades take place from mid-November through to January.

3. Visit the Christmas museum

Open all year round, apart from February and March, this dedicated Christmas museum houses Christmas ornaments and decorations, Christmas trees, Perchten masks and toys, from the era between 1840 and 1940. It’s especially magical to visit at Christmastime and, as it’s located above the traditional coffee house, Café Glockenspiel, you can enjoy coffee and cake after your visit.

4. Catch a Christmas concert

Nothing says festive magic like enjoying live music in a historic town square sparkling with lights, or in a beautiful church or grand hall. During Advent, Salzburg bursts with musical performances, including brass ensembles, choirs and young musicians. There are many to choose from, so take a look at the SalzburgerLand website to plan ahead.

5. Browse the Christkindlmarkt market

For anyone who treasures old Christmas and Advent traditions, the Salzburger Christkindlmarkt, held on Cathedral Square and Residenzplatz, is the place to be. Alongside the customary mischief of the Krampus and Perchten, you’ll find brass musicians performing atop balconies and Cathedral arches while Christkind and his angels make their yearly appearance, delighting children and adults alike. The market itself is a winter wonderland of its own, with culinary delights like the mouthwatering Haunsberger that’s only available at Christmas. Fun fact? No two stands at the Christkindlmarket are allowed to serve the same food, so make sure you come hungry to sample everything.
