The symposium will begin with a Keynote Presentation on Friday, March 6, at 6:30 pm by Robert A. Day Professor of Art and Design and Vice Dean of Critical Studies at USC, Amelia Jones. Dr. Jones will present a paper based on the work of renowned international performance artist Nao Bustamante, who deliberately engages in "inappropriate" performances in order to explore the ways in which she activates the hysterical (in the sense of hilarious but also as identified with female hysteria). Bustamante embarrasses viewers of all kinds and provokes our response to questions of "appropriate" or normative social behavior. The symposium theme pivots around Jones' scholarship and following the Keynote Presentation there will be three panels on Saturday, March 7 from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm reflecting hysteria and the Middle East, Media and Medicine, and Black or Queer Performance respectively.
