Dr. Ruth Behar is the Victor Haim Perera Collegiate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. She was born in Havana, Cuba, and grew up in New York. Dr. Behar’s honors include a MacArthur “Genius” Award and a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. Known for her writing about the search for home in our global era, her books include The Vulnerable Observer: Anthropology That Breaks Your Heart and An Island Called Home: Returning to Jewish Cuba. Dr. Behar has also published poetry and fiction, and she directed the documentary film Adio Kerida/Goodbye Dear Love: A Cuban Sephardic Journey.
