ALL DOGS (Columbus, OH)
- Most of the scratchy and sentimental twee-punk that All Dogs have turned out since their 2013 split tape with fellow Ohioans, Slouch, could be described as confessional, but as time passes it's clear that the word doesn't apply to the band in any sacred sense. Look only to the even-keeled aggression of the Columbus quartet's new single, "Georgia", for evidence. Rather than embrace meek supplication in the wake of romantic turmoil, songwriter Maryn Jones owns up to her wrongdoing, admitting right off the bat that she "can't be trusted." Fluttering slide guitar leads and Jones' wordless drawl make up an instrumental that manages to be both more twangy and more restrained than much of the pop-punk that Detroit label Salinas Records (which released All Dogs' debut 7") has been putting out for the past decade. And that instrumental bridling only makes the pain of her harsh self-appraisal even more apparent. Jones' songwriting to date has mostly been great for its diaristic yearning, but "Georgia" shows that she's can as capably, and humanly, document the situations where she's in the role of the aggressor. - Colin Joyce, Pitchfork.com
