Heather's Birthday And Despedida (Going Away) Party says
Hi friends, come help me celebrate my birthday and send me off on my next adventure!

My cousin DJ DAPS will be spinning at some point. Kraken Congee has a full bar and will have some pork belly awesomeness on special. There are also veggie, chicken and non-pork options! I hear they may stay open longer if we are able to sustain the party (challenge accepted?).

I hope you come and kick it with me!

A little background: Back in the 70’s and 80’s, it was the “in-thing” to make sure your kids were monolingual in English. American Imperialism is a jerk and racism is real. What were my parents to do in the face of “expert advice” that said that speaking more than 1 language to your kid would confuse them? (B.S! I’m gonna kick someone in the face for that!)

They wanted my brother and I to succeed in our home country, but I don’t think anyone anticipated the high-cost of being denied access to so much: the regular conversations about daily routines, the loud and boisterous jokes told at Thanksgiving, birthday barbecues, and at rosaries, and all that goood, dirty family gossip...

So here I am - about to celebrate another birthday and another year where I sit around at family parties and have no idea what people are saying to each other, feeling like a dummy. But that era is about to be OVER.

I’m going to the Philippines and I’m going to learn the crap out of Tagalog, and do my best at picking up Pangasinan (the language my parents speak to each other). I’ll be gone a year - learning how to be a Filipino in the Philippines.

I can’t thank my peeps at SEIU 775 enough for letting me take a 1 year leave of absence from my job, so that I can go away and come back a more whole person. Most likely I’ll also be an even better community organizer. There’s only one way to find out…

My last day at work is Sept 25th and I'm leaving shortly thereafter. BRB, guys, I’m just gonna go be Filipino for a sec.
