Kplu's Sound Effect Live: "A Friend In Need" says
KPLU's 'Sound Effect' Live: "A Friend in Need" w/special guests Tom Robbins, Tim Durkan, Kimya Dawson, Melanie McFarland and more!

KPLU's news and culture magazine, 'Sound Effect' (heard Saturday mornings at 10 AM) presents an evening of storytelling organized around the theme, A Friend in Need. Join us for radio made visual, including onstage interviews, a photo presentation and live music. The event is a benefit for the effort to Save KPLU, as the station races to raise enough money to stay alive and independent.

Our special guests:

--Iconic author Tom Robbins will read from his memoir about his days in community radio. He'll then listen, along with the audience, to excerpts of archived recordings of his 1960s broadcasts, followed by a brief Q&A. Check out an NPR review of Robbins' latest book, "Tibetan Peach Pie":

--Seattle photographer Tim Durkan will talk about the hidden side of Seattle and what has led him to dedicate himself to documenting it. He'll share a series of his striking photos, chronicling the pretty and the gritty.

--Singer and songwriter Kimya Dawson will share personal reflections and a song or two.

--Seattle writer and critic Melanie McFarland will give a live storytelling performance.

...and more!

Save KPLU needs to raise $7 million in six months to match the amount of the current offer stated in the letter of intent outlining Pacific Lutheran University's sale of KPLU to the University of Washington. Donations to the Save KPLU campaign will ensure the survival of an independent, local newsroom, hand-picked and professionally curated jazz and blues, and a continuing commitment to local music education.
