The event creator says
Join us for a special evening of music at the Royal Room--Tom Varner's Nonet, celebrating his critically acclaimed new cd "Nine Surprises," and the return of WACO, featuring the beautiful and searching music of Robin Holcomb.

Featured on both sets are some of Seattle's most creative players including Thomas Marriott, Al Keith, Samantha Boshnack, David Marriott, Nelson Bell, Eric Barber, Steve Treseler, Jim DeJoie, Stuart MacDonald, Mark Taylor, Tom Varner, Phil Sparks, and Greg Campbell.

Tom Varner is internationally known as the foremost jazz French horn player of his generation, and as an inventive, witty, and passionate composer, breaking new ground in his writing for small-group jazz to big bands. "Varner has a Mingus-like gift for intertwining complex counter-melodies in a manner that's more soulful than acrobatic. This approach creates countless opportunities for inspired improvisation, resulting in a marvel of cohesive ensemble writing and playing." (Nate Chinen, Philadelphia City Paper)

WACO (Washington Composers Orchestra) was created in 2008 by Robin Holcomb, Wayne Horvitz, and Tom Varner. Featuring top-flight Seattle improvisers and composers, this adventurous 15-piece ensemble challenges and extends the landscape of traditional big band repertoire. “A big band for modern times.” (Earshot Jazz)

Robin Holcomb is a distinctive pianist, vocalist, composer and arranger. She writes music for ensembles of all sizes and has recorded for Nonesuch, Songlines, Tzadik and New World Records. “Robin Holcomb is haunted….not that she isn’t an original.” (Alex Varty, Georgia Straight)
