Despite their valuable contributions to our understanding of phenomenon throughout the solar system, magnetometers are one of the first instruments to be cut from space missions because of the costs involved. Paige Northway, a student in UW’s Earth and Space Sciences Department, will look at magnetic field measurements in space and how to continue the critical work played by magnetometers in a cost effective, less complicated way–by incorporating the magnetometers on small auxiliary satellites.
