Shelley Rice, Arts Professor in the Department of Photography & Imaging and Department of Art History at New York University will deliver a lecture titled "Rio de Janeiro and the World: Marc Ferrez, Photographic Mobility, and International Modernity."

Born in Brazil of French parents and raised in Paris, Marc Ferrez (1843–1923) was the most celebrated studio photographer in Rio during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Traveling back and forth between Europe and South America, inventing and sharing new technologies, displaying his photographs in exhibitions and World’s Fairs on three continents, Ferrez was a true cosmopolitan. His international career defies all attempts to define a “center” and a “periphery” in photographic history, and opens up a new map of modernism based on the mobility, portability, and reproducibility of image networks that were global long before our time.
