Zurich is known for its workaholics, right? Right. According to the Time Out City Index 2018, residents of the global centre for banking and finance are  unsurprisingly  working an average 41.1 hours a week, which is higher than both the global and European average.

But what we didn’t expect to lay bare, is that they’re still managing to carve out time in their busy schedules to get frisky in threes. Of the Zurich citizens we asked, 34% have had a threesome, compared with the global average of 20%. Who says these guys are all work and no play?

As well as what’s going on in people’s beds, The Time Out City Life Index charts the most exciting cities in the world right now. We surveyed our readers and ranked 32 cities on criteria including food, drink and culture, local neighbourhoods, friendliness, affordability, happiness and whether people were proud to live in their city.

Chicago came out as the world’s number one city for having fun and enjoying city life, with Zürich at number 21, ahead of Beijing, Washington, D.C., Bangkok, Moscow, Hong Kong, Miami, Sydney, Geneva, Dubai, Boston, Singapore and Istanbul.

So it may not triumph in the international rankings, but the population of this swish Swiss city seem quite content with their lot. 70% of people said they feel proud to live in Zurich, highlighting its beauty and safety as the best things about life there. A resounding 98% said they feel safe walking around, up against a slightly more gloomy European average of 79%.

But it is the Zurich transport system getting most of the love  74% of people surveyed said they can get wherever they want easily and cheaply  that’s three times more than the European average. Hooray for VBZ!

Transport aside, life in Zurich is far from a bargain. Our survey revealed that you’ll need an annual salary of €97,500 to live comfortably, with the average citizen earning just under that at €97,250. There are more renters than the European average and 62% don’t ever expect to own a property within the city.

As for letting your hair down, the average night out will set you back €176.30 (a cool three times the European average), with a restorative coffee at €6.60. However, like the majority of cities surveyed, most people couldn't sacrifice their caffeine hit.

Zurich’s prices may be eye watering, but over half of people we asked said it was worth the money. They might leave the city the most, with the majority jetting off elsewhere at least once a month  but when they are back in town, they adore its efficiency, safety and beauty. Over 60% can usually find somewhere good to eat, but over a third said they would never queue for a table  no matter how good the food looked. Steadfast and sexually adventurous – it looks like there's more to the Swiss than meets the eye. Read more about great bars, restaurants and nightlife in Zurich here.
