Everyone talks about escaping the daily grind, but so few of us actually take time to do it, even though the benefits are huge. In Switzerland, however, the rewards of stepping back from the day-to-day are almost beyond belief, as you have some of the most stunning landscapes imaginable just a short journey away.

That’s why it’s time to forget about the office for a weekend (or – our recommendation – even longer) and get out into the mountains. It’s here that you’ll find out what Switzerland is really about and it’s here that you’ll be blown away, time after time, by numerous snow-tipped Alpine peaks, glaciers and lakes. Whether you’re looking to go hiking, skiing, tobogganing on a family holiday or just exploring at leisure and rediscovering nature, it’s time to break out and discover the mountains, including the slopes.

The good news is that breaking out has been made a whole lot easier thanks to SBB, who are offering the perfect gift for Christmas and beyond through a huge selection of discounts on exciting winter adventures for everyone when travelling by public transport.

If cultural expeditions are more your thing this winter, SBB have got you covered there as well, with a range of reductions for all kinds of top museums, including the Swiss Museum of Transport and the Swiss Science Center Technorama.

Below, we’ve picked out some of the very best outdoor winter activities from around Switzerland (all of which boast a hefty SBB discount) to keep you occupied all through the season. And remember you can find more inspiration for exciting ways to discover the mountains over at the SBB website.

With so many options for skiing it can be difficult to know where to start, but luckily we’ve got some top tips for superb slopes this winter. For a true feeling of escapism as you carve, Adelboden-Lenk is a fine choice, with guaranteed snow and 200 kilometres of pristine slopes meaning a huge variety of runs on offer. Then there’s Sörenberg, ideal for families and casual skiiers thanks to wide slopes and the Mooraculum children’s paradise, although those with more experience can test themselves on the Freestyle Line. If you prefer skiing with even more of a view than usual, the amazing vantage point above Lake Lucerne from Klewenalp-Stockhütte – set 1,600 metres above sea level – should suffice. There are plenty of slopes, but also the options to explore this Alpine paradise by hiking, snowshoeing or sledging.

The only thing that could make these resorts even better is a big discount on the fees, which is exactly what you’ll get via the Snow’n’Rail offer, which provides a discount on a one or two-day ski pass from 20%, plus a 15% rental discount and 20% travel discount – and there are even more Snow’n’Rail discounts to be had across Switzerland.

After travelling through a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the wonderful Rhaetian Railway, you’ll arrive at the epic Preda/Darlux-Bergün Tobogganing World, where full-throttle fun awaits. Zoom down two different runs (one measuring 6,000 metres) and get an up-close view of that gorgeous Alpine scenery as you speed past it. But this high-speed fun comes at a low-cost price, since you can enjoy a 20% reduction on the return journey to Bergün, as well as a 10% discount on both a tobogganing day pass and a toboggan ride from Preda to Bergün.

Towering a breath-taking 3,454 metres above sea level, Jungfraujoch is a part of the Alps’ first UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also Europe’s highest rail station. It’s an absolutely essential sight to tick-off the list when out in the mountains, and you can do it at a discounted price when buying your ticket through SBB, via a 20% discount on part of your return rail journey to Jungfraujoch and back.

There are few better ways to connect with the Swiss landscape than cross-country skiing, and there are few better places to cross-country ski than the Goms. This famous district boasts over 100 kilometres of pristine slopes spread over 12 trails, but don’t worry if you’re not a pro, as there are routes to suit all abilities, including family-friendly trails. Whoever you’re embarking on your adventure with, there are savings to be had through SBB, including a 20% reduction on travel, a 10% reduction on a one or two-day ski pass (we recommend two days, if you can, as this allows you to really get to grips with your chosen routes) and a 15% reduction on equipment rental.
