Ticino’s finest foodie holidays

What could possibly make Bellinzona’s legendary castles even more magical? How about enjoying inspired Mediterranean cuisine as you gaze at those castles? That’s what you’ll be treated to at this perfectly positioned restaurant, set in a unique location between the town walls and vineyards of Castlegrande, offering unrivalled panoramic views of both Bellinzona and its castles. Thankfully, the food is just as impressive as the views, with a menu that highlights traditional flavours and produce from around the region.

This quietly sophisticated restaurant is in the perfect setting for exploring lively Lugano, found alongside the city’s striking Palazzo dei Congressi and overlooking its iconic lake. Head chef Nicola Costantini skilfully combines Swiss, Western European and Mediterranean flavours in a menu that utilises seasonal produce. Ciani is also a great option if you’re visiting Lugano with family, as the restaurant welcomes children and even provides an indoor playground for younger visitors. After dinner, head to the lounge bar for a cocktail or glass of something from Ciani’s extensive wine list. And after that, you’ve got the whole of Lugano on your doorstep, so the choice really is yours.

As you might well guess from the name, at Atenaeo del Vino, wine is just as important as the food. It’s no surprise when you consider that the restaurant also operates a popular wine bar and shop, boasting over 600 carefully chosen bottles that the expert sommelier, Mirko Rainer, is happy to advise on. But as excellent as the wine is, don’t think for a moment that food takes second place here – as soon as you sample the menu’s homemade pasta and other Mediterranean specialities, you’ll realise that every dish has been given as much thought as that marvellous wine. Best of all, you’ve got the many delights of Mendrisio to explore afterwards.

The Peccia Valley is a beautiful place at any time, but never more so than when you’re viewing it from the comfort of Grotto Pozzasc, a former mill surrounded by greenery and located on the bank of a gentle stream. Claudia and Christian are the brains behind this cosy, family-run establishment and they’ve created a menu that showcases some of Ticino’s best-loved dishes and flavours. These include the area’s famous polenta, served with favourites like minestrone or cheeses from the local area. Just make sure you leave room for some of the restaurant’s homemade cakes – trust us, you’ll be glad you did.

It takes design flair to execute the rustic-yet-modern restaurant style, but that’s exactly what chef Persyo Cadlolo and his wife have done with this charming venue. Luckily, the couple have taken just as much care over the menu, featuring a small but perfectly thought-out selection of creative, Mediterranean-inspired dishes, including a substantial vegetarian offering that shows off the tastes and traditions of Locarno. If that piques your interest in the area, you’re only steps away from the suitably named Piazza Grande and the heart of the city, so get exploring – as soon as you can tear yourself away from Locanda Locarnese’s food, that is.
