Eight British airports now let passengers pack up to two litres of liquid in their hand luggage

Tech has come a long, long way since the 100ml liquid rule was introduced to airports in 2006. The hand luggage limit – one we’re all very familiar with – was implemented 20 years ago in response to a transatlantic bomb plot, which planned to use explosives disguised as soft drinks. But in 2018 it was announced that, thanks to advanced new technology, the rule wouldn’t have to be in place for much longer.
New CT scanners can take 3D pictures of the insides of bags, meaning that travellers no longer have to put their liquids in separate clear pouches or take out their laptops and tablets. There are a handful of airports that have the new machines installed and have already got rid of the 100ml limit. Instead, they now allow passengers to pack vessels of up to two litres of liquid in their hand luggage (though why anyone would need to travel with bottles that big, we’re not sure).
However, the roll-out of the new tech is several years behind schedule and most UK still have the old liquids rule in place. So, before your next holiday, take note.
These airports still require passengers to keep liquids to 100ml, but most no longer need you to have them in a separate transparent bag. That means you can keep them inside your hand luggage at security. You also no longer need to take your electronics out, unless specified.
