Asda plans to expand across the UK and open 25 new convenience stores this year.

The supermarket wants to grow its offering of smaller stores, reaching customers living in city centres and towns. The retailer plans to open its new Express stores between June and Christmas 2025.

This is all part of the shop’s wider push to return to its former glory, as Asda sales fell by five percent in February 2023. The green supermarket’s wider market share has also decreased over the past few years, with competition from budget shops like Aldi growing stronger. Asda hopes to compete with Sainsbury’s and Tesco which currently hold the biggest market share of supermarkets in the UK.

Allan Leighton, the supermarket's new chairman, is thought to be the brains behind the big expansion. He told the Telegraph: ‘Our job is to fix it – but not just to fix it. We have to build it, reset it, turn it into what it was.’

TDR Capital and the Issa Brothers will fund the Asda expansion, paying for new outlets, price reductions, and refurbishments of existing stores.

The locations of the new Asda Express stores hasn’t been confirmed yet.
