British TV’s night of nights – the 2024 BAFTA Television Awards with P&O Cruises – is fast approaching and with it a chance to give the best telly and streaming shows of the last 12 months their flowers.

The awards take place this coming Sunday and the nominees are a formidable bunch. Vying for little golden masks in different categories will be the likes of ‘The Crown’, ‘Succession’, ‘Slow Horses’, ‘Top Boy’, ‘The Bear’ and ‘The Last of Us’.

It’s been a stellar year for British and international TV and streaming and it should make for a stellar afternoon-stroke-evening. Here’s what you need to know.

When is the BAFTA Television Awards?

The awards take be broadcast on Sunday May 12, starting at 7pm BST. They’re co-hosted by comedian-presenters Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan.

If you’re into the whole red-carpet fashun side of things – who’s wearing who, etc – you’ll want to tune into the BAFTA TikTok channel from 14.45pm where Michelle Visage and comedian Tom Allen will be chatting to the stars.

(As with the film BAFTAs, there’s a delay on the broadcast, so if you want to come to it fresh, stay off social media ahead of 7pm.)

How can you watch it

The awards will be broadcast on BBC One and iPlayer in the UK, and available for catch-up on iPlayer.

Outside the UK, it’ll be available via BritBox in the US, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and several other countries worldwide.

And even if you’re mid-ocean, you can tune in: sponsors P&O Cruises will be screening the ceremony on seven of its ships at sea.

Who’s nominated?

The biggest contenders include ‘The Crown’ with eight nominations, with Charlie Brooker’s ‘Demon 79’ – the final episode of season six of ‘Black Mirror’ – following up with seven.

‘Happy Valley’, ‘Slow Horses’, and BBC gaslighting thriller ‘The Sixth Commandment’ have six nods each, and there are five for ‘The Last of Us’, ‘The Long Shadow’ and ‘Succession’.

Earning their first BAFTA Television nominations are ‘Happy Valley’s Amit Shah, ‘The Last of Us’ star Bella Ramsey, ‘The Crown’s Elizabeth Debicki, Bridget Christie for ‘The Change’ and Kane Robinson for ‘Top Boy’.

Somehow, it’s David Tennant and Harriet Walters’ first BAFTA nods, too. They earned their nominations for ‘Good Omens’ and ‘Succession’ respectively.

Another award to look out for is the audience-voted ‘P&O Cruises Memorable Moment Award’. Up for that one are the following (NB voting has closed):

  • ‘Beckham’: David teases Victoria about her ‘working class’ upbringing
  • ‘Doctor Who’: Ncuti Gatwa being revealed as the 15th Doctor
  • ‘Happy Valley’: Catherine Cawood and Tommy Lee Royce’s final kitchen showdown
  • ‘The Last of Us’: Bill and Frank's Story
  • ‘The Piano’: 13-year old Lucy stuns commuters with jaw dropping piano performance
  • ‘Succession’: Logan Roy's death
