The real My Cottage is an hour’s drive from London and 200 years into the past

Netflix smash Bridgerton gives us a Cinderella story in season 4 as serial philanderer Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) romances undercover ladies’ maid Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha) at a masquerade ball. Based on Julia Quinn’s third book, An Offer from a Gentleman, the pair go on to contend with shadow lives, familial expectations, class prejudice and – checks script – one evil stepmother. It’s a good thing then that Benedict’s sizeable countryside estate, ironically named My Cottage, steps in to provide respite from societal noise along with a quiet spot for a skinny dip.
Here’s everything we know about Ben’s love den.
The unlikely pair find themselves at My Cottage when they take refuge from a thunderstorm en route to London. The duo travel together after Sophie loses her job as a ladies maid and Benedict offers her passage in his carriage. It’s here Benedict begins to question the real identity of the Lady in Silver from the masquerade ball. The soon-to-be lovebirds also enjoy a leisurely breakfast in Benedict’s boudoir and Sophie spots the second eldest Bridgerton bro practicing his breaststroke sans clothing in the lake.
Yes. Loseley Park, a 1,400 acre Surrey estate, stands in for My Cottage. The Grade I listed manor was built by Sir William More between 1562 and 1569 and has close links to the Tudors. It features panelling from Henry VIII’s Nonsuch Palace and is also home to a rare portrait of Anne Boleyn. Queen Elizabeth I also stayed at the property, and is reported to have planted a mulberry tree in its gardens.
Loseley Park has been a private family residence for over 400 years. It opens to the public on select days during the summer and winter months. House tours start from £15 per person, with no pre-booking required.
Its farm shop The Farmm, known for its homemade chutneys, jams and fresh bread as well as its own blend coffee, homeware and fresh flowers, is currently closed following a fire.
Yes. The estate has a range of 1-2 bedroom cottages on its grounds that can be booked by the day or week (email for information). The rooms are rustic and cosy, featuring high vaulted ceilings, exposed timber beams and four-poster beds.
The price of a stay at My Cottage is available on request, but similar properties in the area are priced between £157 and £311 per night, according to Expedia.
A regular location used for British period dramas, Loseley Park doubled as Broadlands, the Mountbatten family home, in The Crown. It has also been used in productions including The Gentleman, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Rebecca, Midsomer Murders and Belgravia.
The Bridgerton cast spent two weeks filming at Loseley for the fourth season. Thompson, who swam naked in the estate’s lake, told Netflix’s publication Tudum that ‘the lake was freezing’, while Yerrin added that ‘the result of [the scene] is steamy’. Despite the cold, Thompson described the experience as ‘magical’. At the series premiere he added: ‘[Yerin and I] were just getting to know each other as actors as well as the characters.’
