The strip of Victorian-era arches which support Brighton’s King’s Road are in desperate need of some love

Right now, Brighton is as great as it’s ever been. New saunas, volleyball courts and an open water swimming pool have already scored it a place on Time Out’s list of the best seaside towns in the UK to visit in 2026. Now, newly-announced plans for a revamp will secure its iconic seafront for the next century.
More than £22 million of government funding has been pledged to fix and upgrade Brighton’s coastal facade. If you’ve ever taken a trip along its pebbled shores, you’ll have noticed the Victorian-era arches which line the beach-front path below King’s Road. Well, those structures are in urgent need of some TLC. Without it, the strip could be forced to close.
The road, which connects Brighton Pier, Brighton Beach and the i360 observation tower, carries around 22,000 vehicles and nearly 1,500 cyclists a day, and the essential works will make sure travellers can keep on trucking for another 100 years. Plus, the cash injection will upgrade the spaces for local cafés, bars and galleries once the essential safety works are completed.
Improvements will be made in two phases to ensure that not all of the road is forced to close at once. Step one will see the arches between the bandstand and i360 undergo maintenance, which should be completed by 2027. Next up will be the area west of Shelter Hall, with all the works scheduled to be finished in 2029.
According to local councillor Trevor Muten, the funding could go towards reviving the King’s Road’s much-loved paddling pool, as well as creating ‘a better home for local businesses in this vibrant space on the seafront’.
