Over the past few years, Newcastle International Airport has consistently been named one of the finest airports in the UK and even crowned the best in the entire world (twice!). Who can resist that kind of excellence, eh?
More than 41 new routes have been added to the airport since 2020 and things are only getting better. This week, it was announced that Britain’s biggest budget airline, easyJet, will be reopening its Newcastle airbase after shutting it down five years ago.
easyJet currently offers eight routes from the airport but the new base, launching in March 2026, will allow the budget airline to offer a range of new routes to the region.
The company said that it’ll open a three-aircraft base at the airport, creating 130 new jobs for people in the area and supporting around 1,200 jobs UK-wide through supply chains. Routes haven’t been announced yet but Geordies can expect affordable flights to the likes of Portugal, Greece, Spain and Turkey, plus a few city destinations, too.
Nick Jones, the airport’s chief executive, said: ‘It is fantastic that easyJet has chosen to open a new base at Newcastle airport in spring 2026 following such strong demand for flights and package holidays from our passengers.
‘This investment will not only offer greater connectivity with the launch of new routes, but it will also deliver hundreds of thousands of additional low-cost seats and package holidays for our passengers; a significant boost to the local economy by creating high-quality jobs and attract more inbound visitors to the region.’
Kenton Jarvis, easyJet’s chief exec, added: ‘This not only consolidates our position as the UK’s largest leisure airline but will create many skilled jobs and provide critical connectivity for the region, playing an important role in enabling vital economic growth for the UK.’
