If you’ve been keeping up with the World Cup thus far, you’ll have enjoyed the lavish spectacle of all the games taking place in Qatar over the past couple of days. But you probably haven’t enjoyed it all as much as the Welsh fans.

Those who tuned into the Wales versus USA match yesterday may well have enjoyed the national anthem segment. The Welsh fans went in harder than anyone else and it hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Viewers across the globe took to social media to marvel at the fans belting out ‘Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’ before Wales’s first World Cup match in 64 years.

One person wrote: ‘As an Irish man living in Scotland why did my eyes fill up on hearing that Welsh national anthem sung with such fervour... is it because our Celtic sisters and brothers have such a close bond with each other...?’

An American viewer said: ’Dear American friends, I’d like to introduce you to the Welsh national anthem. You just heard it spectacularly. It is the best in the world. Give it a listen sometime, it’s well worth it.’

Another wrote: ’I’m sorry American friends but the Welsh national anthem knocks it out the park!’

One woman was also seen red-faced and crying as she passionately sung along with the likes of Gareth Bale.

ICYMI: here’s why 2022 was a breakthrough year for Welsh-language music.
