We can now reveal the boozer that clinched first place. Drumroll, please...

Manchester’s The Peveril of the Peak – or the Pev, as locals say – has been named the best pub in the UK.

The magnificent yellow and green-tiled watering hole on Great Bridgewater Street is what some might call a ‘proper pub’ – it’s kitted out with a pool table, dart board and jukebox and pours a damn good pint. The three-floor joint has been serving patrons for more than two centuries, and while being fairly large, it’s crammed with cosy nooks, vintage stools and sticky tables, as all good pubs should be.

‘The Pev is the kind of pub that’s so perfect, it deserves to serve as the venue for the wetting of your head, your wedding and your wake. And, preferably, as much life in between,’ wrote Time Out contributor Kyle MacNeill. ‘The boozer — rumoured to be both a former brothel and a haunt for ghosts — has been overseen by legendary landlady Nancy Swanick, who still lives above the bar and is now well into her 90s, for over 50 years.’
