Love it or hate it, one thing you’ve got to give Wetherspoons is that it’s reliable. You always know what you’ll be getting, whether that be nachos served on the iconic white and blue crockery or the cocktail pitchers that have fuelled many a small town night out.

But even this British icon has felt the combined impact of the pandemic, soaring prices and dwindling footfall. Last year it announced that it would be selling a more than 30 of its venues as a result. The chain saw a 1.1 percent drop in sales in the five weeks to November 6 2022, compared with 2019 figures. The same month, it announced that an additional seven pubs were being put up for sale, bringing the total tally of Spoons on the market to 39.

Now 11 branches around the country have been sold and are gradually closing their doors. Pubs closed so far include Edmund Hulley in Lewisham and The Postal Order in Worcester. However, Wetherspoons boss Tim Martin said that he remains ‘cautiously optimistic’ about Wetherspoons’ future.
