As people continue to proclaim the death of the high street and retailers and banks continue to announce closures of their physical branches, not even the Post Office – a bona fide high-street staple – is safe any more.

The postal service has more than 11,500 site across the country but has recently announced the closure of a handful of its branches. It already said goodbye to the site in Haselmere, Surrey on May 31 and those due to close over the next two months include Colchester’s West Mersea High Street branch and one in Rosehearty, Aberdeenshire.

A spokesperson for the Post Office said: ‘This is the most challenging economic climate retailers have faced in decades and we fully recognise the pressures postmasters face to keep their branch open and serve their local community.’

But it’s not all bad news. A selection of those due to shut are actually being relocated. Here are all the sites affected:

  • West Mersea High Street Post Office, Colchester – closing June 9 (relocating to Mersea Island Supermarket on June 14)
  • Gilstead Lane Post Office, Bingley – closing July 10 (relocating to Ferncliffe Road on July 11)
  • Rosehearty Post Office, Aberdeenshire – closing July 22
  • Soham Post Office, Cambridgeshire delivery office – closing July (relocating to Ely delivery office)
  • Eaton Post Office, Norwich – closing date to be confirmed

ICYMI: This Scottish high street is getting a massive £6 million makeover.

Plus: There will be strikes at Heathrow Airport basically every weekend this summer.
