One of the year’s most critically-acclaimed movies lands on Netflix in the UK this weekend.
Wasteman stars David Jonsson, freshly announced as the new Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The nail-bitingly tense crime drama follows Jonsson’s prisoner Taylor, incarcerated for manslaughter, but soon up for parole and hoping to be reunited with his estranged son.
Taylor’s chances of an early release are thrown into turmoil by the arrival of Dee, his new cellmate who traps Taylor in a web of drug-dealing, blackmail and violence.
With a punchy runtime of 90 minutes and enough twists to keep you guessing, it’s one heck of a ride, but also a bleak insight into the reality and culture inside prison.
The drama was filmed across 14 days at Shepton Mallet Prison, the world’s oldest penitentiary. The Somerset location closed in 2013 but is now open to tourists for anything from guided tours, haunted halloween events and even silent discos.
Wasteman holds an impressive 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Time Out’s own review describing it as an ‘unnerving anti-buddy film injected with a frantic drum ‘n’ bass soundtrack and some Safdies-style paranoia’.
Wasteman is available to stream on Netflix from Sunday, September 20.
