Here are all the reasons you should visit the ‘surprisingly bustling’ town of Oban

After a spell of rubbish weather, things are looking up for the UK again. Sunny skies and balmy temps are forecast for most parts of the UK for the next week and a bit, so there’s only one thing for it... to the seaside! Sure, seaside towns are a good idea whatever the weather but it’s only under bright sunshine that we can really appreciate them in all their glory.
With that in mind, we want to shine a light on the places that made it onto Time Out’s list of the best seaside towns to visit in 2026. We’ve given you the lowdown on Saundersfoot, Hastings and St Leonards, Southsea, Folkestone, Alnmouth, Portrush and Cowes. Now, it’s time to tell you why the remote Scottish town on Oban made the cut.
Situated on the west Highlands coast, Oban is often thought of as Scotland’s seafood capital and the ‘Gateway to the Isles’. Time Out UK editor Joe Mackertich called the town ‘livelier than you’d expect, stunning on sunny days and full of people who enjoy having a laugh’. He recommends paying a visit to the Tartan Tavern for a pint and making the most of the regular ferries that take you to nearby islands like Mull, Iona, and Barra.
Food-wise, you can’t go far wrong at plush seafood spot Ee-Usk or its sister pizza restaurant on the north pier, Piazza. For something more informal (but equally delish), queue up at the Oban Seafood Hut by Oban Ferry Terminal to get exceptional fresh oysters, langoustine and fish at unbelievable value for money.
To fill the rest of your time in this bustling little town, stop by the world-famous Oban Whiskey Distillery to sample drams of Scotland’s finest, check out the ruins of Dunollie Castle on the edge of town, climb up to the imposing McCaig’s Tower and Battery Hill and amble through town to find indie shops like Oban Chocolate Company or The Oban Whisky & Fine Wines Shop.
