What are your plans for the August bank holiday? Jetting off somewhere continental? Getting some long-awaited work done around the house? Or maybe you’re just planning to get settled into a local beer garden and enjoy a good few pints with some friends. Whatever it is, you’ll need to know what to expect from the weather so you can plan accordingly.

The good news is that the Met Office is currently predicting ‘mostly fine weather’ for the upcoming weekend, but that comes with a caveat: remnants of a Caribbean hurricane are making it slightly more difficult than usual for meteorologists to accurately forecast what’s to come.

Despite that, the bank holiday weekend (August 22-25) is shaping up to be pretty dry, with lovely warm temperatures on Monday. Here’s what forecasters are currently expecting for the weekend.

Friday August 22

Friday could be the most stable day this weekend, with generally dry weather expected across the board. There won’t be too much sun, and temperatures will be at their highest in the low 20s inland and in the south-east, but you also probably won’t need to remember your umbrella when you leave the house. A jacket might be a good idea though, as temperatures could drop slightly overnight.

Saturday August 23

Saturday should be much the same as Friday, albeit with slightly more clouds coming into western areas. Places on the Atlantic coast will be getting colder, but there’s still not much rain expected. Temperatures will remain in the low twenties.

Sunday August 24

The Met Office is predicting ‘widely fine and dry weather’ for Sunday, although it does caution that by the end of the day rain is expected in the north and west of the country. There could be some cloud coverage throughout the day, although southern areas will avoid most of this. Temperatures in the south and south east will begin to climb before they peak on Monday.

Monday August 25

Monday is still a few days away, meaning that the weather is very likely to deviate from current forecasts by the time it actually arrives. With that said that wet weather in the west is expected to continue, with the rest of the country remaining mostly dry and the majority of us enjoying ‘warm or very warm’ temperatures, particularly in the south and south east where the mercury could hit 28C.

Hurricane Erin in the UK

Early next week we could catch the tail end of hurricane Erin, a category three storm which is currently tearing through the east coast of the US and the Bahamas. Although it has been life threatening over in the States, by the time Erin reaches us it will have calmed down, although we could still catch the remnants of the rain and wind.

Simon King, the BBC’s head weather presenter, explained: ‘Into next week the weather will eventually turn a little more unsettled… While Erin is still over 3,000 miles away from the UK, it will eventually weaken as it moves across the North Atlantic and arrive to the west of the UK as an area of low pressure’.

This means ‘more unsettled conditions’, according to the Met Office, which added ‘it is possible we could see some wet and windy weather for the last week of August’.
