We have all sat around a dinner table at some point and debated which British supermarket should reign supreme. Does Aldi really have better knock-offs than Lidl? Are you sure Waitrose does posh groceries better than M&S?

Well, now you can consider the debate well and truly over because consumer magazine Which? has just revealed its 2023 ranking of the best British supermarkets.

In the poll of more than 3,000 shoppers, M&S took the top spot with an overall customer score of 77 percent. Aldi and Waitrose were close behind, each with a score of 73 percent.

Down at the bottom half of the rankings, Co-op sat in last place with a 61 percent customer score, joined by all members of the traditional ‘big four’ – Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons.

Scores took into account the range of products, stock availability, quality of own-label produce, store appearance and checkout queuing time.

In a year that shops and customers alike are set to struggle with rapidly rising prices, value for money is a major factor that many of us will take into consideration. Unsurprisingly Aldi and Lidl both scored four stars in this category, while Co-op was given only one and M&S, Waitrose and the ‘big four’ scored two.

Here’s the full list of the best UK supermarkets for 2023, according to Which?:

  1. M&S
  2. Aldi
  3. Waitrose
  4. Iceland
  5. Lidl
  6. Sainsbury’s
  7. Tesco
  8. Asda
  9. Morrisons
  10. Co-op
