Living in the suburbs can be a little dull. Forced to watch the excitement of the city from a distance and spend your time heading to Tesco or working in a home office, it doesn’t hurt to spice things up a little. Residents of Prestwich in Greater Manchester will be glad to hear that their time in the spotlight has finally arrived, as their suburb’s village square could soon get a huge overhaul.

Plans to regenerate Prestwich’s town centre were submitted to the local council by developers Muse Places. The project will cost over £100 million, and the company hopes it will ‘cement [Prestwich] as one of the best places to live and visit in the north west.’

The plans, if given the go ahead, will give the Greater Manchester town a series of exciting new spaces, including a community hub (complete with library), places for local clubs or leisure, retail spots and a market hall for food vendors with plenty of space for customers to relax inside and outside. The village square will also be upgraded in an effort to create a vibrant community centre with space for events throughout the year.

Muse’s director of project management Stuart Rogers described the project as ‘a major moment for the future of Prestwich and the culmination of many months of in-depth community consultation.’ The council expects to reach a decision on the fate of the project this spring, and all being well work should break ground towards the end of 2024.
