Thanks to its long, tumultuous and often gruesome history, Britain is allegedly home to heaps of paranormal activity. From knights on horseback to wandering monks and decapitated priests, ghost fanatics are well and truly spoiled over here.

And if you really, really want to be creeped out, travel experts at StressFreeCarRental.com have done the research to reveal the creepiest villages in the country based on stuff like ghost sightings and local hauntings.

At number one was Pluckley in Kent, which has long held a reputation as Britain’s most haunted village, even making it into the Guinness Book of Records. It’s believed that there are at least 12 spirits roaming this village, though many say there are more. Ghoulish residents include the ghost of a drowned Gypsy woman, the hanging body of a schoolmaster and a lady who haunts the churchyard of St Nicholas’s (pictured above).

Brave visitors can take part in a ghost walk around Pluckley, either on their own or with the protection of a guide, for a chance to see apparitions for themselves.

Clophill in Bedfordshire ranked second, where there have been numerous reports here of graveyard attacks, witchcraft and satanic rituals. Many link these phenomena back to the fact that the village’s Church of St Mary’s was built facing the wrong way in the foureenth century and, as result, its doors open up to hell. No thanks.
