Residents of (and potential visitors to) Shrewsbury, listen up! A brand-new train station could be coming to town. Proposals have been revealed for Shrewsbury Parkway station which could provide rail links for the east of the town and help reduce traffic at Shrewsbury’s main station.

The project is part of a wider plan to improve transport in the area, which also includes a new hop-on, hop-off ‘water taxi’ on the River Severn. If approved, those plans could lead to massive changes in Shrewsbury: the town could see a total of 20 ‘core improvement’ projects take place over a period of three years.

Among the other transport upgrades that have been put forward, there’s a new pick-up and drop-off area for Shrewsbury’s main railway station, two-way bus corridors through the town centre and more pedestrian- and bike-friendly routes.

About the plans, Ian Nellins, Shropshire Council Portfolio Holder for Climate Change, Environment and Transport, said: ‘It's ambitious and exciting, and some of the proposals might be surprising, but I would urge everyone to take the time to consider them and how they would impact the town centre.’

He added: ‘As is made clear throughout the strategy, we are not talking about closing roads to traffic, it’s about considering a different approach to the way people travel in and around Shrewsbury.’

A public consultation is due to start later in the month and will continue until March 22.
